FAQ

Frequently asked questions

The things families ask me most:

My student isn’t failing. Can you still help?

A lot of the students I work with aren’t failing. They’re capable students who’ve hit a wall they struggle to get over alone and the grade just hasn’t caught up yet — or they’re doing fine and want the 5 and the college credit. Both are great reasons to consider tutoring.

The one thing I can’t force is desire — and the willingness to put in the hours that go with it. If the real problem is that your student isn’t willing to do the work, then I’m probably not the right solution.

More on who I’m for →

How do we get started?

We start with a quick conversation to talk through what’s going on and whether I can help. If it looks like I’ll be a good fit and your student joins as a weekly student, the first thing I usually recommend is a short diagnostic — included in the weekly rate, not an add-on. I’ll send an assessment home so I can see exactly where they stand and build the plan around it.

Are sessions online or in person?

Regular tutoring is online and one-on-one. The spring AP Exam Sprint is available as a small group of up to three students, with a one-on-one option as well. Sessions use screen sharing, a digital whiteboard, and a shared code editor for computer science.

What if my student is really far behind?

That’s for me to worry about — not you, and not your student.

  • My job is to find exactly where they are right now and build a plan to bring them up to speed, however far back we have to go.
  • Their job is to ask questions fearlessly and relentlessly, and to put in the work. If they’ll do that, we’ll catch them up.

Here’s exactly how →

How much does it cost?
  • $135 per session for a reserved weekly slot
  • $155 for a single session
  • $600 for a 6-week structured AP Exam Sprint

Note that plenty of people know calculus and computer science. Far fewer have spent a career learning how to explain the concepts. Knowing a subject and being able to teach it are different skills, and it’s the second one you’re paying for.

What can you do for my student that AI can’t?

I use AI every day and I won’t pretend I can beat it at instant answers. What it can’t do is notice when your student is nodding along without a clue. Or hear the half-sentence they cut off because they thought it sounded “stupid,” and make them finish it. Or tell the difference between a student who’s stuck but still thinking and one who’s checked out.

Do you help with the AP exam, specifically?

Yes. Beyond the concepts from the course itself, we talk about exam strategy — sometimes while we’re working through problems, sometimes as dedicated prep sessions. And in the spring I run a focused AP Exam Sprint for the final push. There we cover test format, FRQ and multiple-choice techniques, timing strategy, and a plan for walking in calm and confident.

Do you tutor subjects besides these three?

Not really, and that’s a deliberate choice. AP Precalculus, AP Calculus AB/BC, and AP Computer Science A are what I’ve gone all-in on. That allows me to stay sharp on a small set of courses rather than spread myself thin.

Every so often I’ll make an exception for a student I’ve already worked with, or for something close enough to the edge of these courses. But I’m not a general math-or-programming tutor, so if that’s what your student needs, I’m happy to point you toward someone better suited than me.

What are your scheduling, cancellation, and payment policies?

I try to keep this as human as I can, because I know what a school year actually looks like from the inside.

  • Scheduling: Weekly students have a standing time that’s held for them. If you need to move a week, just let me know and we’ll find another slot.
  • Cancellations: Life happens (illness, a band trip, a week that simply got away). If something comes up, just let me know as soon as possible and we’ll reschedule. There are no cancellation fees. I’d rather your student skip a session if they’re too sick or too overwhelmed with other things going on.
  • Payments: Weekly sessions are billed one session at a time, with nothing due up front.
