- They’re strong in math, but tracing, writing, and debugging code feels much harder.
Or maybe your student is doing fine and just has other goals. Not everyone who comes to me is in trouble. I work with plenty of students who are already doing well and want to stay there — or want to be pushed further to earn a 5, receive college credit, or build a stronger foundation before the next course.
The deal I make with every student
Simply tell me “no” until they truly understand what I’m saying.
Keep breaking the concept down until they say “yes” — even if that “yes” doesn’t come until I ask whether they understand that 2 + 2 = 4.
Once we’re there, we build back up.
If we both do our jobs, there’s no reason they can’t master this.

And — like a lot of my students — I wasn’t someone who just “got it” growing up.
They wanted to send me to trade school instead of college
I was diagnosed with a learning disability in second grade, pulled out of class for extra help all the way through high school, and told by my guidance counselor to consider trade school instead of college.
So I know exactly what it feels like to be the kid who “doesn’t get it.” Coming out the other side taught me that a label doesn’t define you, and that there are no limits to what we can learn — given enough time, effort, and the right support system.
I’ve spent my life proving that. It’s why no student in my sessions is ever made to feel ashamed for not understanding something — and why the best part of this job never gets old: the moment a student connects the dots and sees they could do it all along.
